What is Scotchguard?
If you’re unfamiliar with Scotchguard, it’s a thin layer of protectant we apply to carpet, rugs and upholstery to protect against stains. Please note that “this layer” means that it can protect you against most incidents, but don’t try to test its durability with a bottle of Robert Mondavi.
Whether you have a family with kids and pets or if you are living alone, you should always protect what’s important: your surroundings.
You never want to use too much, though. Not for safety reasons, everything we use is non-toxic and safe to be around, but mainly for comfort. If a large amount of Scotchgaurd is applied, you’ll be able to feel it and that may become uncomfortable. Just enough is just enough.
Call and Get Protected Today
Scotchguard should be reapplied every 9-12 months, depending on how much use the treated area gets. Whatever it is that you’re having Scotchguard applied to, we recommend a deep cleaning first. There’s really no point in adding a protectant to a dirty rug or piece of furniture.

What fabric protector does
Protector forms an invisible barrier around carpet and upholstery fibres, so spills stay on the surface long enough to blot away instead of soaking in. It also helps soil release more easily at the next cleaning.
Best time to apply
Right after professional cleaning, when the fibres are clean and open. Cleaning gradually wears protector down, so it is worth reapplying after each deep clean, especially in high-traffic rooms, on light carpet and on family-room furniture.
Where we apply it
- Wall-to-wall carpet and stairs
- Area rugs
- Sofas, sectionals and chairs
- Dining chairs and headboards
Fabric protection questions
Does protector make carpet stain-proof?
No. It buys you time to blot a spill. Very hot or staining spills still need quick attention.
Is it safe for kids and pets once dry?
Yes, once it has fully dried.

Carpet and fabric protection in Richmond Hill, Aurora, Newmarket, Vaughan and Toronto
Fabric protector is a clear treatment applied to carpet, rugs and upholstery after professional cleaning. It coats the fibres so spills stay on the surface for longer instead of soaking straight in, which gives you time to blot them up. It also helps everyday soil release more easily the next time the carpet or sofa is cleaned. For families with young children, pets or light-coloured fabrics, it is one of the simplest ways to keep things looking clean longer.
How protector works
Carpet and upholstery fibres are naturally absorbent. Coffee, juice and food soak in within seconds. Protector leaves an invisible barrier around each fibre, so liquids bead up and sit on top. It does not make fabric stain-proof, and very hot or strongly coloured spills still need fast attention, but it turns many would-be stains into quick clean-ups.
Why apply it after cleaning
- Fibres are clean and open, so the protector bonds evenly.
- Professional cleaning gradually wears protector off, so reapplying after each clean keeps it working.
- New carpet often comes with factory protection that wears down in high-traffic areas within a few years.
Where it makes the biggest difference
- Family room carpet and stairs, where traffic and spills are highest
- Light-coloured sofas and chairs, especially in homes with children
- Dining chairs, which see food and drink spills at every meal
- Area rugs in entryways and living rooms
- Rental units between tenants
- Offices, clinics and restaurants with fabric seating
How we apply it
- Carpet or upholstery is cleaned first with hot water extraction or a method suited to the fabric.
- Protector is sprayed evenly over the damp, clean fibres.
- It is groomed into the pile or fabric for even coverage.
- It cures as the fabric dries, usually within a few hours.
Caring for protected fabric
- Blot spills right away with a white cloth. Do not rub.
- Vacuum regularly, because protector does not stop dry soil from settling.
- Avoid harsh household stain removers, which can strip the protector.
- Reapply after each professional cleaning.
Is it worth it?
For high-traffic carpet, family sofas, light colours and homes with pets or children, most customers find it worth it. For a rarely used formal room or dark, heavily patterned carpet, it is less important. We will give you an honest recommendation for your home.
More fabric protection questions
Does protector change how the carpet or sofa feels?
No. Once dry, it is invisible and does not change the feel of the fabric.
Is it safe for children and pets?
Yes, once it is fully dry. Keep children and pets off until then.
How long does it last?
It wears down with traffic and cleaning. In busy areas, reapply after each professional clean.
Can it go on wool?
Yes, with a product suited to wool.
Will it help with pet accidents?
It gives you more time to blot up an accident before it soaks into the pad, which helps limit odour.
How much does fabric protector cost?
It is priced by area or piece and added to your cleaning quote. Call 647-676-0576.

Who books fabric protection
Families with young children book it for the family room sofa and the carpet under the dining table. Pet owners book it for the areas their pets use most. Landlords and property managers add it between tenants, so new tenants start with carpet that resists stains. Offices, clinics and restaurants use it on fabric seating that sees spills every day. If you have just bought a light-coloured sofa or new carpet, it is a smart first step.

Should I apply protector to new furniture?
Many new sofas come with some factory protection, but it varies. Ask the retailer, and if it has none, a professional application is worth considering for family pieces.
Can I use a spray can of protector myself?
Home sprays can help, but uneven application is common. Professional protector is applied after cleaning, when the fibres are clean, for even coverage.
Does protector stop pet hair?
No. It helps with spills and soil release, but you still need to vacuum pet hair regularly.
Caring for protected carpet and furniture
Protector gives you time, but it works best with a few good habits. Vacuum carpets and upholstery regularly, because dry soil still settles on protected fibres and wears them down. When something spills, blot it right away with a clean white cloth. The protector keeps it on the surface for a while, but not forever. Avoid strong household stain removers and carpet shampoos, which can strip the treatment and leave sticky residue. Use mats at entrances to catch grit and winter salt before it reaches the carpet. In high-traffic areas like hallways, stairs and family rooms, plan to have the carpet cleaned and the protector reapplied every 12 to 18 months, or every 6 to 12 months with pets and young children. For upholstery, reapply after each professional clean.
Can protector be applied to stairs?
Yes. Stairs take more traffic than almost any other carpet, so they benefit most from protection after cleaning.
Not sure whether protector makes sense for your home? Ask when you book. We will look at your carpet, rugs and furniture, explain where it helps most, and leave it off where it would not make a real difference.
