Short answer: make it safe, stop the water, then get the water out fast. The first 24 to 48 hours decide whether carpet and pad can be saved and whether odour sets in. Clean water from a burst pipe or appliance is often salvageable with quick extraction and drying. Sewage backup is different: contaminated carpet and pad usually need to be removed.
The first hour
- Stay safe. Do not walk into standing water near outlets or appliances. Turn off power to the area if it is safe to reach the panel, or call an electrician.
- Stop the source. Shut off the main water valve for a burst pipe or leaking appliance.
- Take photos and video before anything is moved, for your insurance.
- Call your insurer to report the loss and ask about next steps.
- Move valuables and furniture off the wet floor, onto blocks or foil if they cannot be moved.
Getting the water out
Household wet vacuums and towels cannot pull water out of the pad underneath. Truck-mounted extraction removes far more water from carpet and underpad, which shortens drying time and lowers the risk of odour. After extraction, air movement and dehumidifiers finish the drying.
Can the carpet be saved?
- Clean water (burst pipe, appliance leak): often yes, with fast extraction and drying.
- Grey water (washing machine discharge, some groundwater): sometimes, depending on how long it sat.
- Sewage or long-standing water: usually no. The carpet and pad should be removed and the floor cleaned and disinfected.
The pad often needs replacing even when the carpet itself can be saved.
Preventing a musty smell
- Run a dehumidifier until the space is fully dry.
- Keep air moving with fans.
- Keep the basement warm, which helps drying.
- Treat odour once the carpet is dry. See odour removal.
Frequently asked questions
How fast should I call?
As soon as the source is stopped. We are open 24 hours.
Will insurance cover carpet cleaning after a flood?
It depends on your policy and the cause. Call your insurer and keep photos and receipts.
Can I dry the carpet myself?
Small, shallow spills, yes, with fans and a dehumidifier. Larger floods soak the pad, which needs professional extraction.
Should I clean the ducts after a basement flood?
If water reached return vents or ducts in the basement, have them checked once the area is dry.
How can I prevent basement flooding?
Keep downspouts pointed away from the house, check the grading, and consider a backwater valve and sump pump. A plumber can advise on what suits your home.
