How to Get Gum and Candle Wax Out of Carpet

Home / Toronto Steam Cleaning / How to Get Gum and Candle Wax Out of Carpet
Candle wax on carpet with a bag of ice for removal

Short answer: freeze it, then lift it. For gum, hold an ice cube in a plastic bag on the gum until it is hard, then chip it off with a dull knife. For candle wax, let it harden, scrape off what you can, then lay a brown paper bag over the rest and press with a warm iron so the wax melts into the paper. Never rub, and test anything on a hidden spot first.

Gum: step by step

  1. Put ice cubes in a sealed plastic bag and hold it on the gum for a few minutes.
  2. When the gum is hard and brittle, lift and chip it off with a butter knife or spoon.
  3. Work from the outside in to avoid spreading it.
  4. Remove the last bits with a little dish soap and warm water on a white cloth, then blot with plain water.

Candle wax: step by step

  1. Let the wax cool and harden completely.
  2. Scrape off as much as you can with a dull knife.
  3. Lay a plain brown paper bag or white paper towel over the remaining wax.
  4. Press briefly with an iron on low to medium heat, no steam. The wax melts into the paper.
  5. Move to a clean section of paper and repeat until no more wax transfers.

Coloured candles can leave a dye stain after the wax is gone. That often needs a professional spotter.

What to avoid

  • Rubbing, which pushes gum or wax deeper into the fibres.
  • Very hot irons, which can melt synthetic fibres.
  • Printed paper, which can transfer ink.
  • Harsh solvents on wool or delicate rugs without testing.

When to call a professional

Call if the spill is large, the carpet is wool or a delicate rug, a coloured dye stain remains, or you have tried and the area looks worse. A professional pre-treatment followed by hot water extraction usually clears what is left.

Other sticky messes and how to handle them

  • Slime and putty: freeze with ice in a plastic bag, scrape off what lifts, then blot the rest with white vinegar diluted in warm water and rinse.
  • Glue from crafts: white school glue softens with warm water; blot and rinse. Hot glue lifts when chilled.
  • Nail polish: blot right away and do not rub. Test a non-acetone remover on a hidden spot first, since acetone can damage some carpets.
  • Crayon: treat like candle wax, with a paper towel and a warm iron on low heat.
  • Tape residue: chill it, scrape gently, then use a small amount of dish soap solution.

Gum and wax on furniture and car seats

The freezing method works on upholstery and car seats too. Hold an ice pack in a bag on the gum until it hardens, then lift it with a dull knife. On fabric with a W code, finish with a little dish soap and water. Do not use a hot iron on car upholstery, vinyl or leather, because heat can damage them. For wax on fabric furniture, use the paper towel method only if the tag allows water-based cleaning, and keep the iron on its lowest setting.

What not to do with gum and wax

Avoid peanut butter and oil-based tricks found online; they leave a greasy stain that attracts dirt. Do not pour solvents straight onto the carpet, because they can dissolve the glue that holds the fibres to the backing. Do not cut the fibres with scissors unless it is a tiny spot on a cut-pile carpet, since it leaves a visible hollow.

When a residue stays behind

A faint dark mark often remains where gum or wax was. Hot water extraction usually removes it. Call UltiClean at 647-676-0576 or see carpet cleaning and upholstery cleaning.

Gum and Wax in Carpet FAQs

Does peanut butter remove gum?

It can loosen gum, but it adds an oily stain to clean up. Ice is cleaner and safer for carpet.

Can I use a hair dryer on wax?

It can soften wax so you can blot it with paper, but the iron and paper method gives more control.

Will wax damage my carpet?

Usually not if removed carefully. Coloured wax may leave dye that needs professional treatment.

Can you remove gum from upholstery?

Yes, the same ice method works, but check the fabric code first. See upholstery cleaning.

What about slime and play dough?

Let it dry, scrape it off, then treat the residue. Bright colours can leave dye that needs a professional.
