How to Keep Grout Clean After Professional Cleaning

Clean white grout next to dark dirty grout on porcelain kitchen tile

Short answer: sweep or vacuum before you mop, use a pH-neutral cleaner, change your mop water often, dry shower walls after use, and keep the grout sealed. Most dark grout comes from dirty mop water settling into the joints, so how you mop matters more than what you mop with.

Why grout gets dirty so fast

Grout is porous, like a fine sponge. When you mop, loose grit and dirty water run off the smooth tile and collect in the lower grout lines. The water dries and the soil stays. In showers, soap scum, body oils and moisture feed mildew. Over months, light grout turns grey or black.

Daily and weekly habits

  1. Dry clean first. Sweep or vacuum to remove grit before any water touches the floor.
  2. Use a pH-neutral cleaner. Harsh cleaners wear grout and sealer down.
  3. Change mop water often. Once it looks grey, you are mopping with dirt.
  4. Use a microfibre mop rather than a string mop that pushes water around.
  5. Dry shower walls with a squeegee after each use.
  6. Ventilate bathrooms so moisture does not linger.

Cleaners to avoid

  • Vinegar and lemon on natural stone. Acids etch marble, travertine and limestone.
  • Bleach as a routine cleaner. It can discolour coloured grout and break down sealer.
  • Abrasive powders and stiff wire brushes. They scratch tile and erode grout.
  • Oily “shine” products. They leave residue that attracts dirt.

How often to seal grout

Sealer slows down how fast soil and water soak into grout. Busy floors such as kitchens and entryways usually need resealing every year or two, and showers more often. A simple test: drop water on the grout. If it darkens quickly, the sealer has worn off.

Winter salt on entry tile

Salt and slush leave white haze on entry tile and grout in Toronto, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Aurora and Newmarket every winter. Use a mat inside and out, wipe up slush promptly, and rinse salty areas with clean water so salt does not keep drying into the grout.

Grout or caulking?

Black lines in shower corners and along the tub are usually in the caulking, not the grout. Grout can usually be cleaned. Mouldy caulk should be removed and replaced. See tile caulking and recaulking.

When to call a professional

If grout stays dark after scrubbing, sealer has worn off, or caulking is cracked or mouldy, a professional clean resets the floor. Machine scrubbing and hot water extraction pull out soil that a mop cannot reach.

Frequently asked questions

Can grout go back to its original colour?

Usually, yes, when the darkening is soil. Deep stains may need colour sealing.

How long does sealer take to dry?

It depends on the product. Follow the drying time you are given before using a shower or mopping.
