Short answer: act fast. Blot up as much wine as you can with white paper towels, then work cold water into the stain and keep blotting from the outside in. A small amount of mild dish soap in cold water helps lift what is left. Never rub, never use hot water, and never pour salt on and walk away. Dried wine stains usually need a professional pre-treatment.
Fresh red wine: step by step
- Blot immediately. Press white paper towels into the spot and change them as they colour.
- Add cold water. Pour a little cold water on the stain to dilute it, then blot again.
- Use a mild soap solution. Mix a teaspoon of clear dish soap into two cups of cold water, dab it on and blot.
- Rinse. Blot with plain cold water to remove the soap, which otherwise attracts dirt.
- Dry. Lay a dry towel over the spot with something heavy on top for a few hours.
What to avoid
- Rubbing, which spreads the stain and frays the fibres.
- Hot water, which can set the colour.
- Coloured cloths, which can transfer dye.
- Bleach or strong stain removers on wool or coloured carpet.
- Too much liquid, which pushes the wine into the pad.
Dried wine stains
Once wine dries, the tannins bond with the fibres. Home products can lighten it, but they rarely remove it completely without risking the carpet colour. A professional pre-treatment designed for tannin stains, followed by hot water extraction, gives the best chance. Some old stains on light carpet leave a faint mark even after cleaning, and we will tell you honestly what to expect.
Wool rugs and natural fibres
Wool reacts badly to strong chemicals and high heat. Blot with cold water only and call a professional rather than experimenting with stain removers. Read signs your rug needs a professional clean.
Frequently asked questions
Does white wine remove red wine?
It dilutes the stain, but cold water does the same job without adding sugar to the carpet.
Does salt work on red wine?
Salt can absorb some liquid, but it can leave a residue and does not remove the colour. Blotting with cold water is better.
What about club soda?
Club soda is mostly water and can help dilute a fresh stain. It is not a magic fix.
Can you remove wine from upholstery?
The same blotting method works, but check the cleaning code on the furniture tag first. See upholstery cleaning.
Will fabric protector help next time?
Yes. It makes spills bead up so you can blot them before they soak in. See fabric protection.
