Short answer: not every low price is a scam, but “$99 whole-house duct cleaning” offers often turn into much larger bills once the crew is inside. The advertised price usually covers only a few vents or the main trunk, with extra charges for every additional vent, the furnace, “sanitizing” or “mould treatment”. A proper cleaning of a typical home costs much more than $99, so ask for a written quote for the whole system before anyone starts.
How the bait-and-switch works
- A flyer, ad or phone call offers whole-house duct cleaning for a very low price.
- The crew arrives and explains that the price covers only a few vents, or uses only suction.
- They show you dust and push upgrades: more vents, furnace cleaning, sanitizing, mould treatment.
- The final bill is many times the advertised price, or the work is rushed and incomplete.
Your rights in Ontario
Since March 1, 2018, duct cleaning cannot be sold at your door in Ontario unless you invited the company first. A contract signed that way is void. Contracts for duct cleaning signed at home also come with a 10-day cooling-off period, during which you can cancel. If someone knocks offering duct cleaning, you do not have to let them in.
Red flags
- A price that seems too good to be true for a whole house
- Door-to-door or cold-call sales
- No written quote before the work starts
- Pressure to decide on upgrades on the spot
- Claims that your ducts are full of dangerous mould without showing you
- Only a vacuum, with no brushes to agitate the ducts
How to choose an honest company
- Ask for a written quote for every supply and return vent, the trunks and the furnace blower area.
- Ask what equipment is used. Rotating brushes plus strong extraction clean properly.
- Ask what add-ons cost before the crew starts, and decline anything you do not understand.
- Check recent reviews from your area.
- Ask them to show you inside the ducts before and after.
What a real duct cleaning looks like on the day
Knowing what a proper visit looks like makes a bait offer easy to spot. The technician starts by looking at the furnace and a few vents, then explains what will be cleaned. Floors and walls near the work are protected. The system is put under negative pressure with strong extraction connected to the main duct, and each run is brushed so the dust is pulled toward the collector, not pushed into the house. Supply and return ducts, the blower and the registers are all cleaned. At the end you should be able to see clean metal inside the vents you check.
How to report a misleading offer
If a company quoted one price on the phone and demanded much more at your door, you do not have to accept it. Ask them to leave if the work has not started. Write down the company name, the phone number that called you, the advertised price and what was said. You can file a complaint with Consumer Protection Ontario, and you can leave an honest review so others are warned. If you paid by credit card for work that was misrepresented, your card issuer may also be able to help.
A short checklist before you say yes
- The quote is in writing and names what is included.
- Returns, the blower and registers are part of the price.
- The company has a real address and a phone number that answers.
- Nobody pushes you to decide on the spot.
- Add-ons such as antimicrobial treatment are explained and optional.
