Short answer: no. Air ducts should never be steam cleaned. Steam leaves moisture inside the ductwork, and moisture plus dust is exactly what mould needs to grow. Proper duct cleaning is dry and mechanical: rotating brushes loosen the buildup and strong suction pulls it out of the system.
Why steam and ducts do not mix
Ductwork is a closed system of metal runs, joints and insulation. Water that goes in has nowhere to drain. It settles in low points, soaks into any dust or lining, and can sit there for days. In a dark space with organic dust to feed on, that is an ideal place for mould. Moisture can also rust galvanized ducts over time and damage the furnace if it reaches the blower.
So why does a steam cleaning company clean ducts?
Steam cleaning, or hot water extraction, is the right method for carpets, rugs, upholstery and tile. Duct cleaning is a separate service with separate equipment. A good company uses the right tool for each surface: hot water extraction for floors and fabric, dry mechanical cleaning for ducts.
How proper duct cleaning works
- Inspection. Registers come off and the system is checked.
- Protection. Floors and walls are covered at every opening.
- Agitation. A rotating brush works through each supply and return run, breaking dust off the duct walls.
- Extraction. Powerful suction pulls the loosened debris out of the system.
- Furnace area. The blower compartment and cold air return are cleaned.
- Finish. Registers are cleaned and refitted.
What about antimicrobial treatments?
Some companies, including UltiClean, offer an antimicrobial mist after cleaning. It is applied as a fine fog after the ducts are dry and clean, not as a wash. It is optional, and most useful after pest problems or when there is a musty smell.
Parts of the system that need different care
A forced-air system is not one long pipe. Each part is cleaned in its own way, and none of them should be soaked.
- Rigid metal ducts: brushed and vacuumed under negative pressure, the core of the job.
- Flexible ducts: handled gently with softer tools, because stiff brushes can tear the inner liner.
- Returns and the return plenum: often the dirtiest section, cleaned the same way as supply ducts.
- Furnace blower: wiped and vacuumed, never sprayed, since it sits next to the motor and controls.
- Registers and grilles: removed and washed, which is the one place water is fine.
Warning signs a company is doing it wrong
Be careful with any offer that mentions steaming, washing or fogging ducts as the main cleaning step. Other warning signs include a portable vacuum carried room to room with no connection to the main trunk, a job that takes well under an hour for a full house, no look inside the furnace, and pressure to buy add-ons before anyone has inspected the system. Fogging with an antimicrobial product is a finishing step after the dust is removed, not a replacement for brushing and extraction.
Where steam does make sense in your home
Steam and hot water extraction are excellent on carpets, area rugs, upholstery, mattresses and tile and grout, where the fibres or surfaces can handle heat and moisture and the water is pulled back out. That is why a company can use steam on carpets and dry methods on ducts in the same visit. If you are booking both, have the ducts cleaned first, then the carpets and furniture, so any dust that settles is removed in the second step.
Book the right cleaning for each surface

Steam Cleaning Air Ducts FAQs
Is it ever okay to put water in ducts?
No. If ducts have been flooded, for example in a basement flood, they need to be dried and assessed, and badly contaminated sections may need replacing.
Can I use a carpet steamer on my floor vents?
No. Vacuum the register covers and wash them separately in the sink. Never spray water down the duct.
What equipment should a duct cleaner use?
Rotating brushes or air whips to agitate, and strong extraction to remove the debris. Suction alone leaves the layer of dust stuck to the duct walls.
How long does duct cleaning take?
A few hours for most houses.
Can you steam clean a dryer vent?
No. Dryer vents are cleaned with brushes and vacuum, the same as ducts. See dryer vent cleaning. Read the signs of a clogged dryer vent.
Does duct cleaning make a mess?
Not when it is done properly. Openings are covered, and the debris is pulled out of the system rather than into your rooms.
UltiClean cleans ducts dry and mechanically, every time. See air duct cleaning or call 647-676-0576.
