Short answer: vacuum the dry salt first, then blot the stain with a mix of warm water and a little white vinegar, rinse with clean water and blot dry. On natural stone, skip the vinegar and use plain warm water. If white lines keep coming back, salt is deep in the carpet and needs hot water extraction.
Why salt stains keep coming back
Road salt dissolves in slush, soaks into carpet fibres and grout, and dries as a white crust. Surface cleaning removes the top layer, but salt deeper in the pile wicks back up as the carpet dries. That is why the same white lines reappear on stairs and entry carpet all winter.
Carpet: step by step
- Let it dry, then vacuum. Loose salt crystals come out easily when dry.
- Mix a solution of warm water with a small amount of white vinegar.
- Blot, do not scrub. Use a clean white cloth and work from the outside in.
- Rinse with plain water to remove the solution.
- Blot dry and let air move over the spot.
Test any solution on a hidden spot first, especially on wool.
Stairs and entry carpet
Stair treads and the first few metres inside the door take most of the salt. Clean them weekly in winter, and put a washable mat at every entrance, inside and out.
Tile and grout
Sweep up dry salt, then mop with warm water and a pH-neutral cleaner, changing the water often. On marble, travertine and limestone, avoid vinegar because acids etch stone. Salt that dries into grout lines leaves a haze that needs scrubbing. See how to keep grout clean.
Car mats and car carpet
Take mats out to dry, brush off salt, then clean with warm water. Car carpet holds salt deep in the backing, so a hot water extraction clean at the end of winter makes a big difference. See car interior detailing.
What to avoid
- Scrubbing hard, which spreads the stain and frays fibres
- Soaking the carpet, which pushes salt into the pad
- Bleach or strong household chemicals
- Vinegar on natural stone
When to call a professional
If white lines keep coming back, salt has settled deep in the carpet. Hot water extraction rinses it out from the base of the pile. Spring, after the salt season, is the best time to book.
