How Often Should You Clean Your Air Ducts?

Short answer: there is no single schedule that suits every home. Industry guidance recommends inspecting residential ducts every couple of years and cleaning them when the inspection shows buildup. In practice, many Ontario homes need cleaning every few years, and sooner after a renovation, a move, pets or pests.

Why there is no fixed number

The often-quoted “every 3 to 5 years” is a rule of thumb, not a standard. Two homes the same age can be completely different inside: one has a renovated basement and two dogs, the other has one careful owner and a good furnace filter. The right answer comes from looking inside the ducts, not from the calendar.

Signs your ducts need cleaning now

  • Dust blowing out of the vents when the furnace or air conditioning starts
  • Dust settling on furniture soon after you clean
  • Visible dust, debris or pet hair when you lift a register cover
  • A musty or stale smell when the system runs
  • Weak airflow from some vents
  • Signs of rodents or insects in the system

When to clean regardless of schedule

  • After a renovation. Drywall dust and sawdust get pulled into the return ducts.
  • After moving in. You do not know what the last owners left behind.
  • In a new build. Construction debris often ends up in the ducts before move-in.
  • After a pest problem. Droppings and nesting material need to come out.
  • When someone has allergies or asthma and dust is a trigger.

How Ontario winters affect your ducts

Furnaces in Toronto, Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Aurora and Newmarket run for months every winter, moving the same indoor air through the ducts over and over. Fall, before the heating season starts, is the most practical time to book. Keeping indoor humidity between about 30 and 50 percent also helps limit mould and dust mites.

What you can do between cleanings

  1. Change the furnace filter on schedule, more often with pets or renovations.
  2. Vacuum register covers and return grilles regularly.
  3. Close vents and cover returns during renovation work.
  4. Keep the area around the furnace clean.
  5. Clean the dryer vent at least once a year.

Never steam clean ducts

Moisture inside ductwork can lead to mould. Proper duct cleaning is dry and mechanical: rotating brushes loosen the buildup and strong suction pulls it out.

Frequently asked questions

Can I clean my own ducts?

You can vacuum registers and the first few inches of each duct. Cleaning the full runs takes brushes and extraction equipment.

Does duct cleaning lower energy bills?

Clean ducts and a clean blower help the system move air, but savings vary. Be wary of anyone promising specific numbers.

Should a new home have its ducts cleaned?

Often, yes, because construction debris collects in new systems.
